Faux Fur At Any Age

Seeing a recent Guardian article entitled Faux Fur At Any Age got me thinking about how I feel about wearing faux fur. I know it is a question a lot of women ask themselves but for me wearing faux fur isn't like wearing low cut tops or skirt lengths more favoured by a twenty something.

I have never had a problem wearing it. I have a gorgeous shaggy coat which sadly I can no longer do up and now that I have put on even more weight I do feel like a Yeti in it if I'm honest so a big shaggy coat is now out of the question, but that is just me and my size, I can't see any reason why a woman of more slender proportions would worry that faux fur isn't age appropriate. I think it just depends how much you love it and how you intend to wear it.

I adore a faux fur jacket dressed down with jeans and ankle boots and nothing looks more glam over your little black dress and boy do they keep you warm, but always check the weather forecast before going out, looking like a drowned rat is so last season darling.

So having dismissed my jacket (I'm not getting rid just yet) I turned to another faux fur item I had yet to wear, a French Connection gilet my youngest daughter had bought me in the sale a couple of years ago, half price at £70, still an expensive item from a then 19 year old living on a student loan and I was completely taken back by her generosity, loved it but never wore it.

I have gazed at it lovingly languishing in my wardrobe over the last few years and even stroked it affectionately on more than one occasion, but for me it seemed as though the weather was never just quite right for a gilet, either too warm and then suddenly too cold not have your arms covered with an outerwear layer, but I have to say this autumn/winter has been perfect gilet weather being as it is still so mild. I was on an impromptu supermarket trip with one of my daughters in the clothes I was just wearing around the house at the weekend when I suddenly thought I would grab my gilet and give it it's first outing. You see it was nothing to do with the fur issue but the weather issue that had stopped me wearing it before.

For anybody bigger busted and not wishing to add bulk the only advice I can give is to give the long shaggy fur jackets or gilets a miss and stick with a flatter fur in a darker colour to slim you down. If you still aren't feeling the fur, then opt for a scarf like the ones featured in my previous post here as these really do dress up coats and jackets beautifully. Always wear a heel with a fur jacket like I used to, but gilets are fine with flat boots or shoes.

1. Prospect Faux Fur Gilet was £95 now £76 Coast. 2. Aldora Faux Fur Coat £99 Monsoon. 3.Asos Faux Fur Gilet £60. 4. Luxe Grey Coat £85 Warehouse. 5. Cream Gilet £35 Dorothy Perkins at House of Fraser. 6. Chocolate Racoon Gilet £99 Mint Velvet.

Although I wouldn't go for The Guardian's styling if I was a similar age to the model, personally I can't see an issue with faux fur at any age, can you?
